jesus its been months... this past quarter was BRUTAL. finished my practicum, got great reviews...they wanted to hire me but no money. ugh

exhibits class kicked my ass and i loved every single minute of it. learned how to bend plexiglass to make mounts for objects, use giant printers, cut and place vinyl lettering, how to properly hang art and display objects and how to design promotional materials (posters, postcards, etc.). learned how to use Photoshop a bit more extensively again and even learned a bit of Illustrator! fantastic!

archives administration was one of the best classes i've ever taken... so much useful information and we had to write a whole archival policy plan from scratch. hard work, but well worth it.

Clem is awesome and starting to get back in shape for flyball. TeeVee is doing good too - going to be starting flyball classes next month. he's still dr. distracto most of the time, but he's come a long way. oh and BOTH DOGS got their AKC Canine Good Citizen title. totally impressed with both of my guys.

Sean and I have pretty much adjusted to the whole living together thing... just have to keep reminding myself he's not a roommate! there are differences! he's been a huge help this quarter with cooking and cleaning and all that stuff. thank goodness, don't know where i'd be without him. next week is our 1 year...crazy. we're going to the mountains (Allenspark) for the next 2 days to celebrate, plus its the last few days of my spring break.

next quarter i'll just be taking ONE CLASS. AHHHHHHHHHHH!! and working more and still looking for jobs. seems like more are getting posted for the area so I have hope. can't believe graduation is just 10 weeks away. it's a bit overwhelming sometimes... i'll feel much better when I have a job lined up. I have great connections here in Denver and amazing references. one of the head curators at the Historical Society is doing everything he can to try and find something for me. unfortunately, most places (including the state) have hiring freezes. but - they might be hiring some contract workers in 8 months or so since they are moving buildings and will need help with that whole process. fingers, toes and paws CROSSED!

it's been a hot minute.

first off. carrie i promise i will call you back. i promise. or you call me saturday. you always call when im not home! or when im sleeeeping which is hardly ever..but besides. ugh.

went and saw the magnetic fields in boulder on wednesday. hands down..one of the best shows ive ever been to. so if you are a fan - i say shell out the money and go. yes, they're expensive tickets..but totally worth it. all acoustic, original line up. we had 4th row seats right next to stephen merritt for 28 bucks. i was probably 5 ft away from the guy. im totally digging the new album - even if it didnt get fantastic reviews. i like it. a lot. they played stuff from all their albums (even 69 love songs..holiday..pieces of april, i...all of em). played over 3 hours too! there was lots of banter and talking between songs and the whole thing was just so damn intimate. claudia and shirley were suffering from a bit of altitude sickness, so they kept having to run backstage to huff oxygen. no lie. and clearly alcohol was affecting everyone a bit more than they thought it would. yay to colorado! best ever.

tonite is the mountain goats! ahhh two of my favorite bands in one week! im going crazy! ahhhh

finishing up some accessions for RMJHS...then we get to work on the JCRS collection that came in. TUBERCULOSIS!

for halloween our department is each going as a different metadata schema. NERD ALERT! apparently i get VRA, which i am super excited about.

hmm...it's been a while, lets see here....

into week 3 of this quarter... its my last quarter full time! WOOOO. well, next quarter i will be registered full time, but one of the classes is my practicum - which isnt really a class, its an internship. i'm hoping to complete most of the hours over winter break. the big news is that the Denver Art Museum is SUPER excited to have me do my practicum there. lets see if they can offer me a paying job in 6 months. that'd be super sweet. They're putting together some proposals for me to look over to decide what I would like to do. I'll be working with the Collections and Exhibits manager. fantastic!

classes are chugging along.. im not really super excited about any of them really which sucks some balls. reference is pretty outdated, but thats why we have a separate internet reference class i suppose. the professor is really sweet so i shouldnt dog on her too much, but dang. computers are USEFUL!

digital objects is just...confusing. we're slowly getting it but there are certainly a lot of moments where the whole class is like "whaaaa?" so far we've learned all about CYBERINFASTRUCTURE in the arts and humanites, long-term preservation of digital objects (file types, conversions, etc), and what makes a good digital collection. exciting stuff. ahem

my third class is grantwriting which is pretty good actually. i wish it was smaller, but we're writing real grants. ive got a group together of some fellow students and we're going to try and write a grant for sean's school so they can get some money to get their mini-school library off the ground.

jobs are still going well. today my work errand was to take some antique prayer shawls over to the DU costume shop (part of the theater department) and get them pressed. hooray! next week i might get to catalog a hebrew typewriter. but first i have to finish some photographs up. luckily i already scanned them all, i just have to create the entries into Re:Discovery. and then i have to help with some accessions too. wheee.

hmm so what else... lets see tomorrow is sean and i's 6 month anniversary. kinda crazy. kinda not. still great though. still can't believe there's someone so smitten with me. kinda weird. he brings me flowers and buys me pizza. think i'll keep him around for a while.

clemmy turned five! FIVE!!! she's almost old! had her yearly checkup and the vet said she had the teeth of a two year old. awesome sign. whew.

oh and GOOGLEPHONES are coming out next month!!! i seriously might have to get one. i'm a little too excited here. wheeeee GOOGLEPHONE!!!!!!

DNC is over! so neat to see the city involved in such a momentous historical event. DNC events were closed to the public, but i did manage to make it to a taping of the daily show. front row seats even! it was pretty sweet.

procrastination junction! wooo!

i should be working on my last paper for summer quarter.. a 10 pager on textile preservation, but eh. its not due until monday and i have about 3 pages done already. i should be okay. im shooting to have 5 by the end of the day, but we'll see.

work is still going well. here's a box i was working on:

clemmy and i have been going on bike rides a lot the past two weeks since the weather has cooled down a little. we had almost a month of 95+ degree temps, so lower 90s to 80s are FANNNNNtastic

oh...and amanda got a new boyfriend:

the convention starts soon... i decided to nix the archivist convention in san francisco this year so i can be around for the DNC. denver is practically shutting down so it should be pretty interesting. erm a mess. thankfully i dont have to work much the next few weeks so im just going to eat. drink. watch movies. and go for bike rides.

all the while getting ready for my last year of school. wooohooo! in the fall ill be taking digital objects management! (oooooh), reference (meh), and GRANTWRITING. ahhhhhh. should be alright. im ready to be done. still trying to figure out where im going to do my practicum. more on that later.

boyfriends still good...almost 5 months now which is kind of crazy. we went and saw dolly parton on sunday and it was amazzzinggg. any guy that will take me to see dolly is a total keeper. i only cried twice this time...once during coat of many colors and once during little sparrow. oh dolllllyyy <333333

busy. busy. busy.

it's so gratifying to finally be getting paid for what my degrees have been for. even if its not that much money, its really more than ive ever been paid before..and i still am a student so i cant complain. the job with the ad company has been great experience and its a pretty chill work environment.. i dig it.

i started my job with the Beck Archives this week too, which is what ill be doing for all of the coming school year. i LOVE it.

It's actually the archives for National Jewish Hospital (think: TUBERCULOSIS) and the Rocky Mountain Jewish Historical Society. they have EVERYTHING from documents, charters, stained glass windows, textiles, photographs, rare books... anything you can think of. and ill be getting to work with all of it! my boss has written a bunch of books on jewish history of the west too... neat lady. but my immediate supervisor is my age and a mega history buff. we get along just fine. i work with some biddies too.. but its been a great week so far. and they actually trust my judgment! thats a first with any job really... i could get used to this. yay! JEWS! uncle maged would be so proud, right scott?

so i now pretty much have an "in" with every major archive institution in Denver..so hopefully i'll be able to stick around after graduation. we'll move if we have to...but i really hope we dont have to. unless its fort collins. or new mexico. or oregon.

sean started back at work last week... it was all inservice.. started teaching this week. the kids are slowly coming in and he really wont be at full capacity until september. since it is a year round charter school, they wont get the majority of their students until the fall when they have been kicked out of normal public schools. andrea, if you ever want to move to denver i'm sure they could use ya ;-) Since he's lead teacher now, he's got a lot more on his plate... poor guy has been a little stressed. hopefully it settles down some in the coming months. Best Case Scenario: in a year i manage to get a job with a university which means free tuition for me! and him! so he could get his teaching license and move even farther up. if not, there are plenty of programs out there to help pay for teaching certificates if you are already a "highly-qualified teacher" and you wish to continue working in inner-city schools. just need to do a bit more research and make sure we know where we're living first.

i'm boring. i want to start getting the sunday morning paper delivered. yikes.

so i've read 31.. i guess that's good?

clearly i hate fantasy. meh.

i had a mini accident with the scooter today... i didnt fall or crash or anything, i just kinda got my foot stuck when i was slowing to a stop and it snapped back and i sprained the TOP of it. what the hell, right?

i got ANOTHER new job!!!!!! for the entire school year! im going to be an assistant archivist with the Beck Archives at The University of Denver! It's a collection focusing on the history and culture of Jews in the West... and apparently there is some sort of correlation with typhoid. more on that later..this is just what i was told during the interview. it was the first time in my life i walked into an interview and i KNEW what i was talking about. they said "well, we have a few more people to interview so we will let u know in the next week or two." by the time i got home (15 minutes later) i had an email offering me the job. THIS NEVER HAPPENS! what the hell. but im looking forward to it. stuff at Integer is still going well..its an adjustment working for a corporation that is so...hip. but its good. on friday they were passing out free margaritas. yes. at WORK.

ive been getting to hang out with amanda a lot lately, which is totally great. i will be in ohio in 3 days! ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
sean is in minneapolis and im trying not to be too much of a girl, but dang. i miss him. 4 more days for that.

somehow..miracles of miracles..i got an A in stats. what the hell.

preservation class is going well..today we learned all about PAPER CONSERVATION. oooooooooh

sean's been here for a bit... practically moved in, but not officially. the kitties are here since well... he's in and out of town so much for 2 months its just easier for me to watch them here. simbot and capelli are total BFF. crank... has become a bit of an outsider. he still hates me, but is slowly coming around. poor guy. things are still great between that dood and i. a few minor fights, but somehow we always manage to work it out. there's that whole state of love and trust thing going on. creepy, but i like it.

trip officially booked! JULY 5TH-13TH.

spring quarter 2k8 officially OVER! one more year to go! i have 2 weeks off, then STATS for 2 weeks and then preservation and conservation for the rest of the summer. at least its a fun class.

went back to the museum yesterday.. judy is going to have me assist with CHS's part of the Digitization of Denver's Neighborhood's Project. This is a pretty sweet deal. *background note: DPL (denver public library) got a huge grant to start do this digitization project where they are going to document all of Denver's historic neighborhoods. To do this, they need to work with CHS (colorado historical society) and the archive of the city and county of Denver. they are creating a whole new section in DPL to do this, staffing it and buying all kinds of fancy equipment. drool.

so a position was posted that i had applied for but didnt get.. instead it went to this guy james who graduated from our program in the fall and is much more qualified. ironically, i now have his position at Integer (the ad company i will be working for starting in a few weeks). so theyre still in the planning process, but they will be hiring more people in the winter and now.. since i will already be working on the project as a volunteer..i have a good chance of getting a paid position. wooohoo! the first part im helping with is the Park Hill neighborhood so i was doing some serious cataloging of images yesterday. nerd alert! of course, true to any archival collection many of them didnt fit. but i was in my element, elbow deep in photos of the oklahoma land rush of 1893. HECK YES.

oh yeah. new job! i have one more week here at my work study, then i start at Integer as an archivist! its only a summer contract and the pay isnt that great... but its decent and ill actually be doing archiving work. They are a major ad company, doing mostly ads for Coors/ P & G/ etc. i will be taking the images and encoding METADATA and creating databases so that the "creatives" will be able to access images as they need them. It's one of those trendy "hip" companies, where you get to wear jeans, everyone is under the age of 35, there is beer in the breakroom and the building is "green." I'll be working under my friend Bonnie (not my mom), who is their archivist and is in my program. Should be a good gig. metadata! EAD! nerd alert!

saturday nite we had a big party.. a ton of library people, some of Em's friends...plus amanda and matt and that crowd. good times. i drank too much, fell on my ass trying to break up a dog fight and was amazed at how many great people i know in this town.

Last nite was the return of trivia! sean, RJ and i had to be on the smallest team, but we still got 6th place so it wasnt TOO bad. plus, we still win for best team name ever - an annotated bibliography of things we put in your mom. "library of conquest" got first place, but of course they did. micah was on that team and he's a super genius. watch out for his knowledge of presidential history ladies! zing! anyways, a few black and tans and irish carbombs...and having to be at work at 9 am. not such a good day so far. but i'm hoping to fix that with a burrito in just a few minutes. BURRITO!

the quarter is wrapping up. not too much more to do really. have to finalize a group presentation for ethics.. an informal presentation for appraisal class. but that one is fun, because sam and i are partners and our powerpoint slides are humorous. then we have to finish writing our collection policy for NREL. that's the national renewable energy lab for you non-coloradans. and then just a short reflection paper on our arrangement and description projekt. woohoo!

planning the ohio trip. looking like july 5th-13th for sure. think my mom is having a bbq on the 12th. mostly a family thing so we can announce my engagement. okay not really. but that could be a funny joke. hah hah hah. or my pregnancy? even better! i brought this up to my mom and she was less than thrilled. fact is - i could be totally preggo right now and she would probably be ecstatic. she's a little too into grandkids. never gonna happen from this belly. sorry mom.

give it up for more procrastination! I have a 10 page paper due next week thats supposed to have 15-20 sources and i have like four. AWESOME!

so.. sean and i are totally coming to ohio in july. it's looking like the week of the 5th-12th. roughly. planning a trip to cincinnati, probably the 7th-8th, 8th-9th, or 9th-10th. everyone convince mike ingram to play a seedy seeds show that week - during the week, not on the weekend. it needs to happen.

here is what else must happen:
myra's, camp washington, udf, graeters, the CAC, the underground railroad museum,comet burritos, drinking, fried pickles, breakfast, indian food, thai express, and of course, seeing people. oh and if anyone can get us into the creation museum for less than the normal ticket price of 20 dollars - give a hollar. holy crap that is going to be a lot of eating. mmmm.

is anything else going on around then? any good shows to consider? eh? eh???

in other news...i survived meeting his family over the weekend. his parents...remind me of mine and are surprisingly normal. i was totally expecting some serious meet the fockers from the way he described them. but nope. totally normal and nice. his closest brother was there too with his family..and i really hit it off with them. they remind me a lot of my aunt kriss and uncle scott. we talked alternative 80s bands, documentary films and played trivial pursuit. they have two kids, one is 10 and has autism and the other is 3... but nowhere near as hyper as my nephew. good kids.

last nite we celebrated his raise! woohooo! with delicious takeout from watercourse.. oh god..if i could afford to eat there every day i would be vegan in a heartbeat. buffalo seitan wings, veggie rueben for me (mushrooms instead of corned beef and the most amazing red cabbage slaw), country fried seitan for him..equally delicious. plus, they have the best gravy you've ever had period. oh yeah. and vegan "ho-ho" cupcakes for dessert. and you know..im PICKY about my baked goods. best fucking chocolate cupcakes ever. PERIOD. period mutherfucker.

now i guessssss i'll finally get back to work. effin balls. BALLS.

tour of the heritage center got canceled because it was SNOWING. BALLS. then it was beautiful monday and tuesday. in the 80s!!! and now. it's SNOWING again. even bigger balls. we're hoping to reschedule soon.

things are still awesome. i've been suffering from a gnarly sinus infection/sore throat thing. sean actually brought me miso soup and kept me company for the weekend. he's nice.

other than THAT news.. lets see.

this coming friday a bunch of us archiving kids are going up to the american heritage center in laramie, wyoming for a behind the scenes tour from the director - mark greene. mark is also the current president of the society for american archivists so its a pretty big deal! i cant wait to see their preservation labs. nerd alert! zing!

saturday matt/manda are having a BBQ. sean gets to meet the friends. awkward. or not at all. it'll be fun.

sunday is flyball demos at the pet expo! clemmy is readddyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy to play flyyyyballlllllllllllllll.

classes are going well. ethics isnt as bad as we were expecting - at least so far. arrangement is pretty easy so far, because its everything i've been doing at the museum for 8 months. towards the end of the quarter we'll be getting into some metadata structures that i don't know yet.. but for now, it's pretty straightforward. appraisal isn't too bad either. just a final paper, but i think she's knocked it down to only 10-15 pages, instead of 20. can't believe i'm already almost half done with school. crazzzyyyy.

its true! how the fuck did this happen? i'm not quite sure myself. but! here's what i do know. he's pretty awesome.

for those of you who want the quick stats...

30 years old.
vegan. but he's not creepy about it.
MFA in creative writing from the naropa university (jack kerouac school of disembodied poetics).
blue hair.
dorky glasses.
dimples that drive me crazy when he smiles. which is all the time.
teaches 8th/9th grade english at a last chance charter school in denver to at-risk youth. think children of illegal immigrants, heavy gang involvement, drug use, murders and pregnancy.
he loves it, the kids love him and he is the head of the english department.
he's sweet and smart and nice and quirky and a bit twisted. he loves emily dickenson, charlotte rosetti and sylvia plath.
he loves noise and punk rock.
he has two cats, one with only 3 legs.
he wants a farm with a bajillion animals on it.
we share a mutual crush on ira glass and barack obama

and uh yeah. i dunno.. its just making sense for some reason and its creepy and weird, but all in a fantastic way. funny how these things just seem to spring up out of nowhere.

yay! more snow! i love snow, i do i do i do! but! why in gods name does denver NOT PLOW? jesus. took me almost 2 hours to get to work today, and its only 6.7 miles away! AWESOME!

granted, this also included a stop at doggy daycare to drop off clem. but still! it was her second time and she played! and got snappy when i came to pick her up and other dogs were in her way. what a bitch. she's so my dog <3

i also caucused! it was fun! a total clusterfuck at first, but so much fun. totallllly packed, and our precinct captain or whatever did not show up! so...it was madness for a minute, but in the end we voted 56 people for obama, 28 for hilary. obama, obama, obama!

i even got to say AYE and NAY! i felt like a real honest to god member of the continental congress.
